Sand Dollars I generally steer clear of shell mosaics, it's been done so much, and the flea markets are full of sad old shell art pieces that someone at some time spent much time and energy on. That said, I DO have a rather large supply of sand dollars, and wanted to make something just for the fun of it... |

Girlly Dog Figurine and shards Dog Figurine with shards from Doll Figurine My favorite figurines currently, besides my standard Capodimonte from Italy, are pieces which are marked “Occupied Japan”. They have a certain look and age, and can be fairly affordable if chipped, cracked or broken. Some BRIEF history: The unofficial occupation of Japan began when Emperor Hirohito broadcast the unconditional surrender on August 14, 1945.

Finished Mosaic Girly Dog Hanging Finished Dog Tile, Sorry for the color difference... Since Japan needed to rebuild their economy after World War II, an agreement was made where in order to export goods out of the country, they had to mark 50% of all items with "Occupied Japan" or "Made in Occupied Japan." These items were produced during an apparently very short time, say 1942 – 1949, so it is somewhat telling of the amount produced in that time period. This stuff is everywhere. But probably not for long, as newer, more modern “collectables” take over the marketplace.Visit my Amazon Handmade Shop for details, pricing, and mosaic gifts currently for sale
